Site Description:

The Lewis and Clark expedition camped west of Vermillion, SD, opposite Bow Creek or 'Arch Creek' on August 26th, 1804. At the mouth of Bow Creek was the village of Petite Arch or 'Little Bow', named after the Omaha Indian by whom it was established. While camping here, Private George Shannon, the youngest member of the Corps of Discovery at 19 years old, set out with George Drouillard near present-day Bow Creek to recapture some of the group's lost horses. Private Shannon and George Drouillard became separated, and Pvt. Shannon became lost, continuing upriver ahead of the group. He would not be found until September 11th, after surviving 16 days on a rabbit and some wild grapes.
