Site Description:

Gavins Point Dam is located five miles west of Yankton, South Dakota, at river mile 810. The last in a line of six dams located along the mainstem Missouri River, Gavins Point Dam drains just over half of the Missouri River basin. Completed in 1957 as part of the Pick-Sloan Act of 1944, the plan gives Gavins Point Dam and the five other dams on the mainstem Missouri River eight authorized purposes; flood control, navigation, irrigation, hydropower, water supply, recreation, fish and wildlife, and water quality.
